Kamp Kaleo

Kamp Kaleo is a church camp formerly administered jointly by the Nebraska Conference of the United Church of Christ and the Nebraska Region of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Owned and operated now by the independent corporation Kaleo on the River, the camp exists to provide a safe place in which to explore questions of faith, learn more about Jesus Christ, and build lasting relationships with people across the state of Nebraska. Located just east of Burwell, Nebraska on Highway 91, Kamp Kaleo offers an idyllic retreat on the banks of the North Loup River. The Kamp’s facilities include a central lodge with a dining hall, library, and game room; a Discovery Center with room for musical and art activities (and an in-ground storm shelter); a Welcome Center staffed each week of summer camp by an RN or LPN; a staff cabin with year-round accommodations for up to ten; and eight cabins, each housing ten people. The summer camping season of 2012 saw half of the eight cabins reconfigured and equipped with heating and AC units; the other four cabins are expected to be completed by the beginning of the 2013 summer camping season.

St. Luke’s joyfully participates in the ministry of Kamp Kaleo by providing substantial scholarships for our youth to attend each summer, helping to supply the camping program with counselors and directors, and by sponsoring Cabin 7, which we named in memory of Duane Garbers, a late member of our church. Our youth are quick to tell anyone with ears to hear that Kaleo is one of the highlights of their summer and that everyone should go!
